EQAO and Board Plans

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) is an independent agency established by the Government of Ontario. The EQAO's mandate is to ensure greater accountability, and contribute to the enhancement of the quality of education in Ontario through provincial assessments and reviews of elementary and secondary schools.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) develop student assessments based on curriculum expectations. EQAO assessments and their results, along with classroom assessments, provide quality information on the achievements of students, and can help to ensure that they are on the right track. EQAO assessment results are used to improve teaching and learning, and are not used to rank schools.

Assessment Description

Assessment of Reading, Writing and Mathematics

Primary Division (Grades 1 to 3)

Primary Division - taken by students in Grade 3 and tests the literacy and math skills The Ontario Curriculum expects them to have gained up to the end of Grade 3.

 

Junior Division (Grades 4 to 6)

Junior Division - tests the reading, writing and math skills that students are expected to have gained up to the end of Grade 6.

Assessment of Mathematics

Grade 9

All students working toward a credit in grade nine Academic or Applied Mathematics are required to participate. The tests evaluate how well students are meeting the curriculum expectations of the Grade 9 Academic or Applied Mathematics courses from The Ontario Curriculum.

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test

(OSSLT)

Grade 10

This literacy test measures whether or not students are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. Successful completion of the literacy test is one of the 32 requirements students must meet to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). See graduation requirements for more details.
